Wood Mountain Reservation Saskatchewan Canada

My grandparents were married on November 30, 1925 at the Standing Buffalo reservation in Fort Quappelle, Saskatchewan.

My grandpa John's father a Kiglaska Sioux and his mother a Miniconjou Sioux were both members of the Sitting Bull tribe. In three separate groups, during November 1876 and May and June of 1877, they fled to the Wood Mountain area in Saskatchewan following the Custer battle on June 25, 1876.

My grandfathers most recognized ancestor was his great great grandfather on his mother's side, the famous tribal judge Black Moon. (alias- Loves War Not)

My grandma Christina is the great great granddaughter of Chief Standing Buffalo of the Yanktonwan Sioux, who fled to Canada to avoid the Yanktonwan uprising at Minnesota in 1862.

Unfortunately I never had the opportunity to meet my grandpa John because he passed away a year and a half before I was born. During the many years that my grandma Christina lived with us, she shared with me many stories of her incredibly interesting life and taught me a great deal of things about our family history. I remember being comforted when I would hear her sing Indian songs while she did her beadwork. All through my childhood my grandma told me many bedtime stories of old Indian legends and tales.

I am a member of the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota and the Wood Mountain Reservation in Saskatchewan. Like my grandparents I am very proud of my North American Native heritage, that is why I share this with you today.
