I love all of the creator’s living creatures but with out a doubt cats, both domestic and non-domestic are my favorites. This section is designed in honor of the beautiful, mysterious and graceful CAT!!!! So for all you fellow cat lovers out there come on in and enjoy “Cat’s Where It’s At”!!!

Meow I would like to introduce you to our three cats, karmen, Luna and Mandu.

Our Little Karmen

Karmen was the first addition to our family and with out a doubt she is a cat who has her own agenda. I always tell people that she has a lot of cattitude! I use my treadmill every morning five days a week. One day Karmen started to jump on it with me and walk for short distances. As time went by she started to walk with me more and more. Then one day I heard her meowing, I walked in the living room to find her sitting on the treadmill waiting for me to go on with her. It is a manual treadmill and she wasn’t heavy enough to make it go with her own body weight so David and I raised the front so she could walk on it by herself. She still enjoyed walking with me when I did my morning workout but she also walked on the treadmill by herself more often and for longer periods of time.

karmen About one year later David and I purchased a house in town. We stored the treadmill in the basement while we were moving in. Karmen was so curious about her new home that for a time she forgot all about the treadmill. We figured that she would forget about it completely and never walk on it again. We finally brought the treadmill up stairs. It was very dusty and needed a good cleaning before I could use it so we stood it up in the corner of the living room. I still had a lot of unpacking to do so I wasn’t going to clean it for a few days. In no time Karmen spotted the treadmill started meowing and went and sat beside it. We were both surprised that she actually recognized it. The meowing got so bad that we finally had to clean and set up the treadmill so she could go on it.

karmen It is now four years later and she still loves her treadmill. We always hear her walking on it after we have gone to bed. Now our spoiled little Karm Karm has taken to meowing REALLY sharp and loud if we don’t pay attention to her while she walks on the treadmill. She especially likes to do this when I just get up in the morning and want to start my day with a peaceful cup of coffee. Sometimes it seems that the treadmill is more hers then mine! We love ya Karm Karm!

Our Little Luna

luna Luna was the second addition to our growing family. We got her about one year after we got Karmen. She was quite young when her mom died and her dad went with the new owners to the coast. From what we understand she got beat up badly while she was out side. I noticed a small rip in one of her ears it must have been quite traumatic for the poor little thing because after that experience she was afraid of everything. I wanted a black cat and fell in love with her the first time we saw her. When we went to pick her up the woman who was taking care of her was surprised that Luna trotted right over to us. It was as if she was ready to come home with us.

luna Unfortunately Karmen wasn’t as excited about sharing her home with Luna as we were. The minute we walked in the door Karmen took one look at Luna and punched her right in the eye. It took several days to get Luna use to her new home and Karmen use to Luna. Today Luna and Karmen tolerate each other. Over the years we have given Luna a very peaceful and safe home. She is affectionate with us but disappears when we get company. She is a wonderful little cat and has filled our lives with a great deal of joy. It is funny that Karmen loves the treadmill so much because Luna is terrified of it and absolutely won’t go on it. Sometimes when we pet Luna and she starts purring and gets cuddly she starts to suck on her back foot. She has been doing this since we first got her. We think she does this because she lost her mom at such a tender age? We love ya Loon Loon and think it is really cute when you do sucky foot!

Glamour Puss

Our little Luna is a celebrity. Some months ago we submitted a photo of her to ‘Cutest Pets Around The Globe’. We are proud to say that our little girl was one of the pets selected to be featured in their publication, that we received in September 2005. The photo they used is the third one down on the right on Cats Where It’s At.

As you can see Luna has become quite glamorous. We told her not to let this go to her head but she told us to, “ tell it to her people!” Luna has people? I think Mandu and Karmen are a bit jealous but we told them we love them all the same!

Our Little Cat Mandu

mandu Mandu joined our growing cat family about three years ago. She is a cute little Bermin X that David brought home from the animal shelter. David new that I wanted a Siamese cat so one day he went to our local animal shelter and asked if they had any female Siamese cats. They brought out Mandu we wanted a short hair cat but David took one look at Mandu and it was love at first site and you can see why. He brought her home and my heart melted because she was so thin and she had no hair on her ears. I didn’t think that she was going to live long so I figured that we would make her last days very special.

mandu Mandu is the most, gentle little creature that I have ever known. She has a cute little meow (nothing like a Siamese) and a quiet little purr. She loves to sit with her daddy on the couch and meows when he comes home for lunch and when he gets home after work. When David comes home from work sometimes Mandu will sit on the treadmill and wait for daddy to give her a cat treat. Needless to say Karmen isn’t impressed when Mandu goes on the treadmill. Over the years we have given her a great deal of love and attention. She has put on weight, has a thick beautiful coat and all the hair has grown back on her ears. They are like little triangles of velvet. I have a funny feeling that Mandu will be with us for quite a long time.

Of our three cats Mandu was the most afraid to go outside. When we started to put her outside she would lie on her back and try to crawl under the door. Now she is the one who seems to want to go out the most. None of our cats like to go outside when it is windy even if it is a warn day, I guess that the wind makes too much noise.

Our Little Cat Bastet

mandu Our beautiful little Manx Bastet is the fourth addition to our feline family! It is a rather interesting story how we acquired Bastet. Last summer Bastet’s brother Max was paying my parents a visit from time to time and they thought that he was such a beautiful and unique cat that they started feeding him. Big mistake because as time passed they grew more and more attached to him. (LOL at this time his name wasn’t officially Max) They suspected that he belonged to someone because he seemed to be pretty well cared for. The weather started to get cooler so they made a bed for him in the rafters of the car port. They were starting to get concerned about how cold it would get for him in the winter. Then one day mom called me and said that she saw an ad in the paper for two Manx cats to give away. She wondered if one of them was Max. She ended up calling the number and to her surprise it was Max and it turned out that he had a sister. The really funny part is that the owner lived just down the street from them. She told him that they had the cat and he said well you might as well just keep him. He asked if they wanted the sister and they said that they could only take one cat. David and I weren’t ready to get a fourth cat yet but I was feeling so bad when I heard that she was living in a shed that I went and saw her. Needless to say it was love at first sight!!!! There was no way I could say no to taking the poor little creature. The lady let me take her immediately, which made me very happy! I got on my cell phone and called my husband at work and left a message on his voice mail telling him about Bastet and that I was bringing her home! Bastet’s original name was Poof and I can see why they called her this because she looks just like a puffball of fur!!! I thought that she was like a little goddess so she deserved to have a goddess name so we named her after the Egyptian goddess Bastet.

mandu Mom and I brought Bastet to our place I wanted to have her cleaned up a bit before David came home. After a year of living in a shed she wasn’t very clean she smelled like feces and her back smelled a bit like motor oil, probably from walking under cars. After a somewhat traumatic bath we managed to get her pretty clean. We didn’t want to upset her too much because everything was still so new to her. So I gave her and all the other cats some catnip to calm them all down. It seemed to work quite well and from her reaction to the catnip I don’t think that she has ever eaten it before she was quite entertaining! Bastet’s fur was still a bit dirty so I put one of our many cat blankets on the bed and she fell fast asleep. When David got home we gave her another bath and that cleaned her fur up perfectly.

Now Bastet is a member of our family and we love her very much and are so happy to have her in our lives. Both she and her brother Max are living good lives now. Luna and Mandu get along with Bastet but she and Karman still have a ways to go yet. Karmen is our first baby and she has been with us for many years and I think that she is a bit jealous of Bastet, so we make sure we give Karmen and the other cats lots of attention to.

We don’t let our cats run free outside. We live in town and there are many dangers here. I know of many people who have lost their beloved cats for many reasons. Sadly one of our neighbors’ cats was poisoned and someone deliberately ran over another ladies cat. We put very safe body harnesses on our little babies and tether them to the clothesline. Of course we keep a VERY close eye on them. On the clothesline they have a lot of freedom and we know that they are safe in our yard. Some people think that it is inhumane but I think it would be far more inhumane if one of our precious babies disappeared and we didn’t know what happened to them. We know that our neighbors appreciate that our cats don’t go to their flowerbeds and use them for a litter box or sit under their bird feeders and wait for dinner. Even with her body harness on our skillful little Karman has caught an occasional bird. We don’t like it but know that this is the nature of cats.

Cat Trivia

The Cheetah is the only member of the cat family that does not stalk its prey; they are the fastest land mammal and can reach speeds up to 60 mph. so it relies on its speed for hunting. The Cheetah is the only member of the cat family who can not completely retract its claws.

To the Egyptians cats were very sacred. To kill a cat, even by accident, was punishable by death. When the family cat died every member of the household would shave off their eyebrows as a sign of mourning and respect.

Cats were one of the last animals to be domesticated by men. (Now cats are trying to domesticate man, ha ha!)

Lions are associated with the sun and domestic cats (Little lions) are associated with the moon (Little sun).

To different cultures the cat symbolizes femininity, fertility, eternity, death, watchfulness, freedom and stealth. It is quite amazing, our house is filled with many precariously placed nick nacks and our cats walk everywhere but never knock anything over.

According to some superstitions you should never let a cat sleep near a baby because it will suck the life from the child. Of course we know that this is not true. This superstition originated from an old Hebrew story about Lilith taking the form of a cat and killing sleeping babies.

Cats can sense changes in the weather. There have been reports of cats actually taking their young out of the paths of tornadoes. It has also been documented all over the world that cats have predicted earthquakes and volcanoes by behaving strangely before the incident would occur.

Cats, especially black ones, have been associated with witchcraft. They were often suspected of being a witches familiar. Black cats were put in wicker cages and burned alive because they were thought to be transformed witches. (No wonder my little Luna is so afraid!)

In the United States black cats are considered bad luck and in England they are considered good luck!

Do you believe in ghosts? There have been many cases of cats being able to see the spirits of people who have passed on. Boo!

You know what they say; "Curiosity killed the cat". Good thing they have nine lives!

If I could be reincarnated into an animal I would be a cat in a heartbeat. Meow!

In Memory of Leo

leo This is in memory of my little baby Leo, often referred to as Witto Woo Woo Puff Puff. My mom called him P.T. that is short for putty tat. In the early 80’s one of my sisters had to move and couldn’t take Leo with her so she gave him to us. Leo grew up around children and was use to being handled so he was very gentle. I know for many people even those who really love cats a Siamese cat wouldn’t always be their first choice. Leo was such an intelligent and amazing cat. We would roll a ball down the hallway and Leo would run after it and bring it back. Leo didn’t like the cold and in the winter he would sit right on the heat vent. It would get so hot that you could sometimes smell singed fur. The one thing that Leo did like was mint toothpaste. We had to make sure to leave the lid on the tube otherwise Leo would stand on it and eat the toothpaste, which I am sure is not very good for him.

Sadly our beautiful little Leo got asthma and became very sick. We gave him medication that helped but at any time he would get an attack and couldn’t breathe. It got so bad that we were afraid to go anywhere and couldn’t always take him with us. Eventually we had to send him to cat heaven. Even the vet fell in love with Leo and found it very difficult to put him down. All of us were in tears over Leo’s passing. It was so heart breaking and took a long time for the sadness to go away. Today I just remember what a special cat he was and this is my memorial to him! Here’s to you Leo!!!

Whose Car is This?

smoky One day my husband David was doing some work at someone’s place. I came along because it was such a beautiful day and we wanted to go for a drive afterwards. It was only a small job so I waited outside in the car. Before David started his work he walked over to the car with this beautiful cat. The cat jumped in the car and onto my lap and started purring loudly. He jumped into the back seat and quickly claimed the two pillows in the rear window. It was a beautiful sunny day so he sat like a king basking in the warm sunlight until David returned.

It was time for us to go and time for this beautiful cat to leave our car or should I say his car. We opened the back doors and David started to encourage the cat to leave. What started as playful coaxing ended with David getting bit. Not hard but just enough to let David know exactly who the boss was! Eventually the annoyed cat left with a hiss and we went on our way…but I did get some really great pictures of this majestic creature!

The next day we met the cat’s mommy and it turns out that his name is Smoky. Smoky’s mom was very amused when we told her what happened and she really liked the pictures that we took of her beautiful baby so we copied them for her. Thank you to Smoky and his mom for letting us share the picture and story with everyone on the World Wide Web!
